Octavio Abúndez

(México, 1981)

ARTISTIC RESEARCH RESIDENCY – ABIERTO ABIERTO PROGRAMME, IN COLLABORATION WITH OPEN STUDIO
February 2018

A Mexican artist from Monterrey, he has exhibited individually and collectively in spaces such as Galería Curro, Museo de Arte de Zapopan and Zona Maco, in Maco Art Fair, Mexico, and Kohn Gallery (USA). His work can be better understood if divided into three different areas of exploration: the phenomenological, the epistemological and the topological. These theoretical approaches share a certain contempt towards the restriction of materials, which results in aesthetic experimentation that can range from classic marble sculptural techniques to photography or everyday objects. Abúndez's interests are often interconnected in a range of site-specific sub-thematics, self-reference and irony. In his recent practice, he has focused on investigating and studying utopian proposals of the physical and conceptual reality of today's society, thus proposing new utopias from an arbitrary position.

Programme organised by FelipaManuela, in collaboration with Open Studio and PAOS Guadalajara.
